Atlantic Puffin

Common at nesting colonies in Canada and on isolated islands off Maine. 

 

 

 

Scripps’s Murrelet

Uncommon on the open ocean on relatively warm water, often very far from shore.

 

 

 

Black Guillemot

Local along rocky shorelines.

 

 

 

Dovekie

Visitors from nesting colonies in Greenland and northern Europe; most numerous and seen from land in Canada.

 

 

 

Common Murre

Common at nesting colonies on rocky cliffs rising out of the ocean, laying eggs on open rock ledges.

 

 

 

Thick-billed Murre

Nesting colonies on rocky cliffs above the ocean, where it chooses narrow ledges with overhanging rocks. 

 

 

 

Razorbill

Nests in crevices on cloffs or among boulders on small rocky islands with other alcids.
